Blessings in Disguise

Blessings in Disguise

Nasir Hussani is a 27-year-old young man whose family came to the United States from Afghanistan in 1998, in search of a better life for themselves. He lives in the Tierra Vida (TV) housing community with his mom and sister. Due to some intellectual and developmental challenges, Nasir isn’t able to find a regular and consistent place of work. To keep from feeling lonely and connected, he keeps himself busy with volunteering for community activities and helping out with the summer and afterschool programs at the TV Rec Center. He also does some yard work on the weekends for a couple of his neighbors to earn a little bit of income.

Nasir would occasionally come into our Collegium Café and get a soda or a snack and get back on his bicycle and ride off. A couple of months ago Nasir started coming in more frequently and staying longer, that was right around the time that we had Shaunee Hooper start working in the Café. Shaunee took to Nasir and was very moved by his kind nature and eagerness to help others. Shaunee appreciates Nasir and shares that “Nasir likes to meet new people and he likes to make others happy. I think, like all of us, he wants to feel needed and feel important. He is very helpful to me and he makes my day.”

He comes to the Café almost every day now and helps Shaunee with sweeping and mopping the floors, cleaning tables, stocking the coke machine, and putting chairs on the tables. He also joins Shaunee on Thursday nights while she volunteers at the Rec Center, teaching young boys and girls how to play basketball. Nasir shared with us that he likes coming to the Café because it makes him happy that he’s able to contribute in some way. Nasir has been a tremendous blessing to the staff here and customers who come in. His contagious smile is very welcoming and we are so grateful for all of the hard work that he is putting into the Café and into our community. Thank you Nasir!
