FIRESIDE CHAT WITH CHERYL BROETJE
On January 17, FUZE held a ‘fireside chat’, the fourth in their series, during which they interview a community leader about what they do and why.? This one featured Cheryl Broetje and was held in our very own Collegium Café in Pasco! Cheryl spoke about three actions we try to practice in our work here: we welcome strangers, we evoke gifts and we help put those gifts to work serving the community. This work has come out of the Broetje’s history with Latino farmworkers working with Broetje Orchards and the adjacent Vista Hermosa community over the years. They came to realize that families who were arriving with so much stress and trauma needed not only jobs, but also a safe place in which to heal and begin to dream new dreams. This place based approach to community development has led to the development of other communities of practice such as Tierra Vida in Pasco.
At the end of the interview it was wonderful to see many people come forward to ask how they could best support immigration reform since immigration challenges continue to delay opportunities to move towards their dreams for so many immigrants.
