Programs at the Center for Sharing are often born out of a need in the community and a servant leader in that community’s response to the need. El Centro de Compartimiento (Center for Sharing in Spanish or CDC) is no different. The idea for CDC was first conceived by board member Lupe Perez in 2005 as a response to the need to develop young women from marginalized Mexican communities. These young women are often unable to continue studying past middle school due to a lack of access to education and leadership opportunity.
The Center for Sharing developed a program in Juchitán Oaxaca, a town where the Center for Sharing had worked with another organization for many years and had noticed a lack of leadership and service opportunities for young people. As a result, CDC first opened the Casa Angeles program with five young women in an effort to help them graduate from college. Several months later, Casa Isabel was opened for younger girls under the management of Kristin Lietz, who brought with her over five years of experience working in the local community.
Since then, the project has grown to house more than 14 students whom we have today, two of which have already graduated. CDC students have community service as part of their development, and as a result, many of them have changed their career choice and educational focus to an area that they feel called to.
CDC has thrived under the leadership of board chair Adela Toledo Luis over the past year. They recently built a new classroom to teach the principles of servant leadership to the community. We’re excited about the possibilities this raises for the community of Juchitán, and the CDC program.
